Biden reverses the ban on the Trump era in Tiktok, Alipay and more

After canceling Tiktok’s sales to Oracle earlier this year, US President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that revoked the previous administrative ban on Tiktok, Wechat, Alipay and seven other applications.

However, the application in question is not out of hot water, because Biden has directed the trade department to evaluate any application or software with bond with foreign enemies and take appropriate action.

President Biden’s new executive order replaced three separate executive orders signed by former President Trump last year which blocked the application including Tiktok, WeChat and Alipay from registered at the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. The previous executive order also allows further steps to prevent this application from operating in the US.

On a fact sheet on the White House website, Biden Administration provides further insight into certain application threats from China and other countries posing for US citizens, saying:

“Biden administration is committed to promoting open internet, can be operated, reliable and safe; protect human rights online and offline; and support dynamic global digital economies. Certain countries, including the People’s Republic of China (PRC), do not share values – This value and strives to utilize digital technology and American data in a way that presents unacceptable national security risks while advancing authoritarian control and interests. “

Secure US consumer data

President Biden’s latest executive order calls the Department of Commerce and other federal agencies to work together in an effort to create recommendations designed to protect against collection, sales, transfers, and access to sensitive data including information that can be identified personally and generic information from US citizens.

While Biden Administration has revoked several Trump administrative executive orders so far, a recent order signed by President Biden expanded the prohibition of Trump in American investment in Chinese companies which believed to have relations with the Chinese military. In total, 59 companies have been banned from investments including those who create and sell supervision technology.

Although this is a step in the right direction when it comes to protecting Americans online, it still has to be seen whether or not President Biden will encourage federal data protection regulations for the US similar to GDPR EU.
