Nick Woodman started the business in 2002 when he started the business. The reason for his start was an excursion he took during 2002 in Australia in which he wanted to take pictures of surfers, but was not able to achieve this because amateur photographers could not reach a sufficient distance or acquire high-quality equipment for a price that was affordable.
Because “going pro” was the primary goal and the only method to film on the water, Woodman, and his surfing buddies all wished to become professional surfers, and that’s where the name “GoPro” originated. The Hero camera line is named after the idea of taking the action of surfing from a close distance giving the subject a heroic look.
